The subject of this biography had an unusual career as a theatrical director, a teacher and a psychodrama therapist. Since the video was produced after his death we decided that given his life's work, the ideal way to tell his story was to stage a psychodrama with several of his former students as protagonists and his wife as director. In their individual vignettes each of them talked about how he had helped them to better understand themselves and how much they appreciated his talent and intuitive skills. With the psychodrama running as a continuous thread throughout the program, we wove in anecdotes and observations from family members, friends and colleagues that revealed the full scope of his life and tragedy of his early death.
The psychodrama and interviews were staged in a professional film studio with a crew of five people. A set designer worked on the props and background, the action was filmed on three cameras and switched in a control room. The script was developed with the subject's wife in collaboration with Smith Hill and the psychodrama participants. In addition to this live footage, we were able to incorporate clips from a 1978 television show in which the subject had demonstrated how psychodrama can be used to both unravel difficult childhood issues as well as lend clarity to everyday concerns.
The result was a program that honored the life and work of an extraordinary man. |
